SUPPORTING THE CHILDREN OF WASHINGTON COUNTY

How we help

  • Grants for families in crisis (ie. fire, illness, job loss)

  • Emergency school requests

  • College scholarship based on need

  • Camperships for foster and needy children

  • Monthly allowances for foster children

Fort Miller Fund

Thanks to the generosity of the employees of the Fort Miller Company, a special account has been established to help working families with temporary financial needs. The Washington County Children’s Committee distributes these funds.

Finances

Income is received from private and business donations during an annual fund drive.  In addition, we have been fortunate to receive generous contributions from various community organization fundraisers. No financial assistance is received from government resources. We receive a yearly donation from the Stewart’s Match Program.

    Referrals

Allowances and camperships for foster children are distributed by the Washington County Department of Social Services. The Guidance Departments in each school district in the county assist with awarding a scholarship to at least one needy student in their district. (Larger districts may give 2 or 3 scholarships.)

Our Mission

The mission of the Washington County Children’s Committee is to assist in meeting the financial deficits of children in Washington County. With emphasis placed on educational, social and health-related issues.

The Washington County Children’s Committee was formed over 50 years ago by a group of residents who were interested in promoting human services for the children of our community.  Along with several other counties in the state, we were recognized as a nonprofit organization under the umbrella of the State Communities Aid Association.

In 2005 we applied for and were granted, independent status as a tax-exempt, nonprofit charity. Donations are tax-deductible and are distributed as needed to children residing in Washington County.

The Committee consists solely of volunteer members.  A dinner meeting is held in the fall, and a budget meeting is held in the spring.  Officer meetings are convened as needed to review special requests.
